Mercy College Receives New York State Approval

The New York State Education Department has approved to expand the Mercy College’s nursing programs to provide increased degree offerings online and at the Dobbs Ferry, MercyManhattan and Bronx Campuses. The new degree programs, part of the College’s School of Health and Natural Sciences, were added to help alleviate the nursing shortage in the Tri-State area and across the nation. The expanded programs also provided a seamless pathway for students to continue their education after the former College of New Rochelle (CNR) ceased academic operations in August 2019. Mercy’s four-year traditional nursing program, which launched in 2015 and has been at capacity since its inception, has now tripled in size. VR Simulation Moves Into the Trucking Industry

Recent research from Brandon Hall Group shows that the use of virtual reality (VR) as a training modality is growing rapidly in “high-consequence” industries—those in which operator mistakes can cause significant property damage or fatalities or both. Anglo American Chooses Immersive Technologies for Training

Located in the Moquegua region in the south of Peru, Quellaveco is one of the world’s largest undeveloped copper deposits. Part of the mine plans are to transition to autonomous haulage systems, and Anglo American Quellaveco will utilize simulation-based training and workforce development solutions from Immersive Technologies to improve the efficiency of new operator training, ensuring its long-term productivity. Finland offers free ‘Elements of AI course’

Finnish tech company Reaktor and the University of Helsinki have launched 'Elements of AI', a free course in Artificial Intelligence. 'Elements of AI' consists of a series of online courses to give a snapshot of AI to users regardless of age and level of education. "It explains what artificial intelligence is, what it can (and can’t) do, and how it affects our lives – all in easy-to-grasp terms, with no programming or complicated math required," Reaktor said. The course has more than 220,000 registered students, with participants coming from over 90 countries. Reaktor said the course has already trained more than one percent of the 5.5 million Finnish population. It is the most popular course ever offered by the University of Helsinki, Finland's largest and oldest university. The launch of the EU-wide course comes prior to Finland's Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2020-2021. The Finnish Presidency has worked with EU member states to reach a shared understanding of the conditions for sustainable growth. UofL Medical Student Leads Prevention of Firearm Injury Effort

Rachel Safeek, a second-year medical student at the University of Louisville, is calling for medical schools to train future physicians in techniques to help prevent injuries and death caused by firearms. Her work has led to UofL being one of the first medical schools to incorporate this training for all students. Image credit: UofL “About 40,000 Americans die and 85,000 others are injured each year from firearm-related causes, and the incidence of firearm-related morbidity and mortality has increased over the past decade,” Safeek said. “This is a very important public health issue. My classmates, colleagues and I believe that physicians have a role in counseling patients related to their health and we have an opportunity through those interactions to help reduce the number of firearm-related deaths and injuries.” In September, Safeek and her colleagues wrote and presented a resolution that was adopted by the Kentucky Medical Association (KMA) to support training in Kentucky’s medical schools to reduce firearm-related morbidity and mortality in their curriculum. She presented a similar resolution at the American Medical Association conference in November, which was adopted by the American Medical Association Medical Student Section.
