VIA launches Mobile360 Mining Kit

VIA Technologies Inc. has launched the VIA Mobile360 Mining Kit, a complete ruggedized system that reduces injuries and fatalities from vehicle collisions in hazardous mining and quarry environments. Drivers can benefit from enhanced situational awareness with a live 360-degree video stream of the vehicle exterior, plus customization options for Blind Spot and Front Collision Detection. “The VIA Mobile360 Mining Kit enables mining and quarry operators to improve on-site safety and reduce the risk of accidents,” said Richard Brown, VP International Marketing, VIA Technologies, Inc. “We’re offering a complete solution suitable for a variety of mining vehicle applications that comes with customer-centric customization as standard.” The VIA Mobile360 Mining Kit is based around a tough and ruggedized system that uses four FOV-190 Gen-Lock cameras to present the operator with a live 360-degree surround view of the vehicle that vastly improves situational awareness for large excavators and bulldozers. The onscreen Tri-Band viewer highlights the area around the vehicle, assisting the driver to spot any intrusion within the hazardous range. For vehicles tasked with moving materials from site to site, safety can be further enhanced with additional FOV-40 automotive-grade ADAS cameras, featuring support for Blind Spot and Collision Detection. Additionally, cameras can be [...]

CITB to bring more people into construction careers

CITB to bring more people into construction careers CITB will target more than 11,800 people to attract them into construction careers. Construction output is expected to grow by 1.3 percent per year with 168,500 jobs created by 2023, challenging employers to recruit more people from diverse backgrounds. Just 16 percent of construction employees are female, and 7 percent BAME, partly because construction firms rely on traditional recruitment methods such as word of mouth. Pathways Into Construction will attract people from underrepresented groups over the next three years with CITB’s investment, establishing recruitment pathways that employers can use in the future. This supports construction employers by helping them meet their workforce and skills needs. Pathways Into Construction will see a £10-million investment – drawn from construction industry levy-payers – in 270 colleges; construction employers and federations; infrastructure projects; councils; housing associations; armed forces organisations; charities; prisons; recruiters and training providers across England, Wales and Scotland to connect employers with people who traditionally don’t enter the industry. The 12 armed forces organisations involved in Pathways Into Construction projects are: BuildForce; Building Heroes; Career Transition Partnership (CTP); Defence Relationship Management (DRM); Help For Heroes; London District (LONDIST); Regular Forces Employment Association; [...]

First STRS Attracts Cross-Sector Training Leaders

First STRS Attracts Cross-Sector Training Leaders Nuclear power. Rail. Construction. Oil & gas. Aviation. Healthcare. Renewable energy. Defence. Maritime. First responders. What do they have in common? They are all safety-critical sectors requiring highly skilled personnel. And they are all facing rapid, disruptive change in their domains, driven by inexorable digitisation and automation, budget pressures and a multi-generational workforce with differing learning styles. Thought leaders and subject experts representing these varied industries came together for the first time in a joint forum to examine their shared challenges and to offer each other best-practice solutions in the selection and training of their current and future employees. The event was the first Simulation, Training and Assessment for Resilience & Safety Symposium (STRS), staged in London by Halldale Group and the European Training and Simulation Association (ETSA), the leading providers of information on training and simulation for high end reliability industries. Andy Smith, Halldale Group “There was a lot of engagement,” said Andy Smith, Halldale Group CEO, “People were enthusiastic.” “Absolutely fantastic. Much better than we could have expected,” added ETSA President Steve Wilkinson. Andy Fawkes, former lead for the UK Ministry of Defence’s simulation policy / strategy development, who served as moderator for STRS, said, “I [...]

Serious Labs develops PAL+ VR training modules

Serious Labs develops PAL+ VR training modules At the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) INNOVATE event in Chicago, Serious Labs announced it is working in conjunction with IPAF to develop PAL+ VR training modules. PAL+ training, which can be completed for the first time on a VR (virtual reality) simulator, tests existing Powered Access Licensed-Registration (PAL) Card holders at a more advanced level than required for the PAL Card operator license. Completion of the course will also renew a PAL Card holder’s license for another five years. IPAF’s PAL Cards are recognized worldwide as proof of the highest standard in Mobile Elevated Work Platform (MEWP) operator training. As part of the event’s “Innovation Stations,” which featured new products and technology, United Rentals exhibited a Serious Labs’ MEWP VR simulator, demonstrating a preview of the new PAL+ training modules to industry attendees. “Operating access equipment on a worksite requires a high level of training and awareness. When you combine the dangers of the worksite with a lack of operator competency, the risk of incidents begins to rise,” said Jim Colvin, CEO, Serious Labs. “Being able to improve and develop operator competency and skill through IPAF’s PAL+ training modules via [...]

Shell works with EON Reality for VR

Shell has announced that its Digital Realities team will work with EON Reality to adopt mainstream Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) solutions across the global business. This led to extensive testing of Virtual Trainer (VT), part of the EON Reality connected learning AVR platform. The AVR Platform provides Shell a central delivery platform, allowing knowledge transfer through experiential training in VR and will support multiple applications across Shell. The EON Reality VT solution has been designed to meet the growing demand for VR systems to be ‘connected’ and become an everyday component of an enterprise IT landscape. As a SaaS offering, the AVR Platform and its constituent products allow enterprises to quickly scale their VR or AR knowledge transfer capabilities without the need for additional infrastructure or development to capture performance data. “Shell is on a digital transformation journey. AR/VR is a key linking technology in that (it) helps us visualise data and environments and make them tangible for our operational staff,” said Michael Kaldenbach, who leads the deployment of Digital Realities at Shell. “Liquid intelligence is what the next generation excels at, we want to use their skillsets at Shell, so we have designed a learning portfolio [...]

Next five years in construction is critical

A new report published by CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) shows that construction can reap major rewards from digital skills and technology, but only if it takes decisive action in the next five years. CITB's report, Evolution or Revolution?, looks at a range of scenarios for the pace of technological change in construction, which will inform the forthcoming CLC Future Skills Plan. The research finds that as a less-automated sector, construction stands to gain much more from modernisation than other parts of the economy. Embracing digital technology and cutting-edge skills can help address ongoing industry challenges like wafer-thin profit margins; the need to recruit, upskill and retain the future workforce; and improving health, safely and mental wellbeing. The next five years will likely see technological adoption evolve, then speed up – but only when the right conditions are in place, including: building a shared definition of what digital construction means and the skills it requires, sharing best practice much more widely and, liberating leaders and managers to take calculated risks and drive new approaches. Stephen Radley, CITB Director of Strategy & Policy said: “Construction has lagged behind other industries in harnessing the benefits of digitalisation but is now looking to [...]
