ATS Prepares Military with Pandemic Response Training

Web-based pandemic response training is available now through ATS’ ATSsim Suite, a collaborative platform to help organizations plan, prepare, and mitigate the impacts of a pandemic. ATSsim Suite is an online virtual collaborative environment where organizations and staff can develop and validate plans, conduct training and exercise events, gather and review facts, and develop lessons learned. “Businesses and government agencies are working now to determine how to continue operations while keeping employees healthy during this pandemic,” said Jason Bewley, ATS president. “This training platform offers an opportunity to examine impacts, decisions and operating procedures and determine the best ways to respond to future waves of the virus.” ATS’ Pandemic Response Planning and Training can be accessed by employees in distributed environments simultaneously. Anyone with a computer and internet access can participate in the training, from anywhere. “The world is changing all around us and things won’t ever be the same. Even in the midst of crisis, it’s important to think about the future,” said Bewley. “Sadly, this virus is expected to return over the next year and it’s important for organizations to learn how to respond effectively.” The Pandemic Response Planning and Training through ATSsim Suite meets U.S. Department of [...]

CAE’s COVID-19 Simulated Clinical Experience (SCE) for healthcare is now available and free of charge to the global iRIS Health Solutions community. iRIS and the SCE will shortly be made available free of charge to the full membership of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH), which has 4,200 members in 60 countries, to aid collaboration and sharing between members at this time. iRIS is a healthcare training authoring and sharing platform with more than 1,800 users worldwide. It allows physicians, educators and healthcare professionals around the world to create, share, and download simulation training for use on simulators from different manufacturers. The addition of CAE’s COVID-19 SCE will allow users to create derivative scenarios for different healthcare contexts and sets of circumstances. It will also enable the delivery of the SCE on other non-CAE patient simulators. “The Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) knows that our members are working tirelessly to develop and deliver critical training and educational experiences during this challenging time,” said Bob Armstrong, President of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. “Social distancing and sequestering are moving learning to virtual spaces. I am very pleased that CAE Healthcare, an SSH Corporate Roundtable member, and their affiliate, [...]

Virtual Heroes Offers Free Sedation and Airway Management Training

HumanSim: Sedation and Airway, a 3D virtual trainer for administering emergency anesthesia and managing breathing for critically-injured or ill patients, is now available for free from Virtual Heroes to support healthcare workers as they adapt to unprecedented requirements in the wake of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Image credit: Virtual Heroes HumanSim: Sedation and Airway is designed to help medical staff gain experience and improve quality of care, by coupling an immersive training environment with an advanced real-time physiology engine. The online software training program allows physicians, nurses, medics and other emergency personnel to practice Rapid Sequence Induction (RSI) and Moderate Sedation, techniques for quickly sedating and intubating patients. Many patients who become critically ill with COVID-19 require airway management in response to acute respiratory distress syndrome, a condition in which fluid collects in the lungs' air sacs and deprives the body's organs of oxygen. Those who develop acute respiratory distress syndrome often require intubation and support from a ventilator. The virtual human technology software simulates real patients, enabling users to sharpen their assessment and decision-making skills through observation of the physiological effects of their actions. Trainees are challenged by 10 separate scenarios that cover a wide variety of [...]

Cognitive3D and Varjo Partner to Better Measure Human Behavior

Varjo is partnering with Cognitive3D, a Canadian company that provides tools for professionals to measure and understand user behavior in immersive environments. The Cognitive3D software can be used to capture user interactions, position, biometrics and eye tracking using Varjo’s virtual and mixed reality (VR/MR) headsets. Image credit: Varjo Combined with Varjo’s human-eye resolution visual fidelity and the 20/20 Eye Tracker, the integration with Cognitive3D means that even more professionals can now benefit from accurate analytics gained from realistic training and research scenarios. “Moving operations and analytics to VR can be useful for scenarios that are dangerous or difficult to repeat otherwise, both in training and research. Additionally, training in VR has proven to be much more effective than traditional methods, as people learn much better by doing,” says Tony Bevilacqua, Founder and CEO at Cognitive3D. “The precise eye tracking and human-eye resolution available only in Varjo’s headsets are necessary requirements for companies to increase trainees’ immersion and capture actionable data. Together, Varjo and Cognitive3D enable companies to maximize the learning opportunities in immersive training and research scenarios.” “Especially in complex training simulations, such as aerospace or medical training, there is a high need for analytics and measuring success. Health Scholars COVID-19 Surge Provider Training Grant

Health Scholars received $1 million in grant funding for surge provider training to help combat COVID-19. The grant will provide approximately14,000 providers its virtual reality (VR) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Desktop Simulation Training to assist health systems with preparedness training. It will enable hospitals to quickly deploy training to surge providers needing to acquire or re-acquire clinical skills related to emergency situations—such as dysrhythmia or a code event. Image credit: Health Scholars “Our ACLS simulation provides a deliberate practice environment for surge providers to prepare themselves for acute care—providing the real-to-life reference experience needed to handle inpatient emergencies while on the frontlines of this pandemic,” says Dr. Brian Gillett, President and Chief Medical Officer of Health Scholars. As hospitals continue to ramp up with the assistance of additional providers to handle the patient surge due to COVID-19, this will entail preparing outpatient providers to perform acute care for inpatients or cross-training providers from other areas of the hospital. “Surge providers may need to assist with the care of critical patients in the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit or General Med-Surge floors, bringing along a challenge of needing to have large numbers of providers quickly acquiring or re-acquiring key clinical skills related [...]

IntelyCare Launches First COVID-19 Training Program for Nurses

In response to the global COVID-19 pandemic, IntelyCare is launching the first training certification program specific to nursing facilities. The training will update nursing professionals on COVID-19 prevention and treatment practices in order to maintain the health of nurses and patients during the outbreak. “As we monitored the spread of coronavirus, it rapidly became clear that nursing homes are ground zero and healthcare workers are at high risk of infection. We recognized an immediate need among our facility partners and nurses for training specifically designed for these vulnerable communities,” said David Coppins, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, IntelyCare. “By offering training courses free of cost to our nursing employees and the larger nursing community, we are ensuring that nurses and facilities are better protected, informed and equipped to care for patients in this unprecedented time.” The coronavirus outbreak is placing intense strain on an already-taxed healthcare industry, exacerbating the existing workforce shortage which, before the virus, was expected to reach a dearth of 1 million nurses by 2030. IntelyCare conducted a broad survey of its nurses to gather feedback, determine the biggest needs, and project the potential impact of the virus on the workforce. It found that 74 percent of [...]
