Anglo American Chooses Immersive Technologies for Training

Located in the Moquegua region in the south of Peru, Quellaveco is one of the world’s largest undeveloped copper deposits. Part of the mine plans are to transition to autonomous haulage systems, and Anglo American Quellaveco will utilize simulation-based training and workforce development solutions from Immersive Technologies to improve the efficiency of new operator training, ensuring its long-term productivity. The mine site will take delivery of a fleet of Caterpillar Autonomous trucks, which will be loaded by Caterpillar electric and hydraulic shovels equipped with Cat MineStar Command for Hauling systems. To train and develop a local workforce for a greenfield operation, Anglo American Quellaveco has invested in simulators and learning systems from Immersive Technologies. The new mine will be running autonomous truck operations once operators are proficient in how to interact with the autonomous haulage environment. With increased role complexity, using an effective and efficient training approach is important in effectively preparing many personnel in a short period of time, while consistently measuring, assessing and optimizing skills to determine permit-to-work. Additionally, in-field training time must be minimized [...]

UofL Medical Student Leads Prevention of Firearm Injury Effort

Rachel Safeek, a second-year medical student at the University of Louisville, is calling for medical schools to train future physicians in techniques to help prevent injuries and death caused by firearms. Her work has led to UofL being one of the first medical schools to incorporate this training for all students. Image credit: UofL “About 40,000 Americans die and 85,000 others are injured each year from firearm-related causes, and the incidence of firearm-related morbidity and mortality has increased over the past decade,” Safeek said. “This is a very important public health issue. My classmates, colleagues and I believe that physicians have a role in counseling patients related to their health and we have an opportunity through those interactions to help reduce the number of firearm-related deaths and injuries.” In September, Safeek and her colleagues wrote and presented a resolution that was adopted by the Kentucky Medical Association (KMA) to support training in Kentucky’s medical schools to reduce firearm-related morbidity and mortality in their curriculum. She presented a similar resolution at the American Medical Association conference in November, which was adopted by the American Medical Association Medical Student Section. The resolution calls for all future physicians to have training [...]

Inlusion De-Icing Tech Innovation Showcased at I/ITSEC

Inlusion demonstrated its de-icing/anti-icing virtual reality training program last week at I/ITSEC in Orlando, Florida. The simulation program was created for Baltic Ground Services. Image credit: Inlusion The program simulates the aircraft de-Icing procedures in VR, including liquid spray, lifting platform control and communication with other staff. Students can practice in two different modes: a full-training program or an examination mode. In the first mode, the user is guided through the procedure by a visual hint system with the ability to make mistakes. In examination mode, the hint system is absent; the user must make his own decisions and act as he was trained. After completing the simulation, users can view the results of their performance, showing the amount of liquids and the places that were sprayed on each separate part of the plane. This VR training tool was developed to fill the gap between theoretical and practical training of de-icing staff. It’s estimated that after practicing de-Icing in VR, trainees will need up to 50% less practical training on actual operations. This will save instructor time, additional personnel involvement in training, and other resources required for training. During unlimited VR training, trainees can practice their spraying skills and learn [...]

Virtualware Immersive Room Unveiled

Virtualware recently unveiled Virtualware Immersive Room, a virtual reality (VR) solution for full-scope field training that allows the military industry to replicate multi-user combat scenarios in 1:1 scale. Image credit: Virtualware The Virtualware Immersive Room will be able to train several units based in different locations but in the same large-scale virtual battlefield. This solution not only improves the individual, team and unit-level performance in real situations, but also reduces the investment in physical replicas and even the expenses of bringing the units together to one location for training. What Virtualware defines as the next breakthrough in enterprise VR is already being used to train complex processes in the nuclear sector; contributing to the improvement of professionals’ capabilities and the reduction of both costs and risks. The first content simulator developed is aimed to train workers in fuel movement operations, using a physical replica of the necessary equipment connected directly to the virtual environment. Virtualware was recently awarded the VR Enterprise Solution of The Year at the VR Awards for the solution.
